Women's Franchise Act, 1902, on 20 May 1903 that women were given the right to vote
in State elections. However, the Act also specifically stipulated in section 4 that nothing
in that Act should be taken to "enable or qualify a woman to be nominated as a
candidate at any election or to be elected as a member of the Legislative Assembly". The
first State election in which women voted was that of 1904. However, only 66 per cent of
the qualified female voters recorded their votes in the 1904 election compared to 74 per
cent for male voters.13
State General Elections were held in 1856, 1858, 1859, 1860, 1865, 1870, 1872, 1875,
1877, 1880, 1882, 1885, 1887, 1889, 1891, 1894, 1895, 1898, 1901 and 1904. An
election was held on 4 March 1897 to elect members to represent New South Wales at
the Federal Convention, and referendums about the Federal Constitution took place in
1898 (3 June) and 1899 (20 June). The first Federal election took place on 29 March
1901.
