Despatch No. 2 of 5 January 1852 (topnumbered as M10506): the
Secretary of State transmitting a copy of a letter received from
Arthur Hodgson, dated 30 May 1851, concerning a public meeting
held at Brisbane relating to the separation of the Northern Districts
from New South Wales and the "introduction of Exiles
accompanied by Free Emigrants into those Districts", and a second
from Mr P Leslie and other gentlemen, dated 22 July 1851, who
had been appointed a Committee at a public meeting held at
Drayton with the same objects.
1852 Despatches
Box [4/1337] contains two despatches relating to the separation of
Moreton Bay or the Northern Districts Despatch No. 93 dated 9 December 1852: the Secretary of State
acknowledging receipt of the Governor's despatch, No.104 of
30 June 1852, and intimating in reply to Mr Marsh, whose letter
had been enclosed in that Despatch, that as transportation had
ceased to the "Colonies situated on the Southern or Eastern sides
of Australia" convicts could not be sent there and, in addition, that
"Her Majesty's Government do not at present see any sufficient
reason or other grounds to erect those districts into a separate
Colony".
Duplicate Despatch No. 1 of 28 December 1852: the Secretary of
State advising that the petition forwarded by Dr Lang to his
predecessor, stated to have been adopted at a public meeting held
in Brisbane on 27 November 1851, praying for separation of
Moreton Bay from New South Wales has been laid before the
Queen.
1853 Despatches
Box [4/1338] contains four despatches relating to the separation
of the Northern Districts Duplicate Despatch No. 7 dated 20 January 1853: the Secretary of
State acknowledging receipt of the Governor's despatch, No. 125
of 11 August 1852, with its enclosed petition from inhabitant
householders in the district northward of the 30° of Latitude
praying for the separation of that district from New South Wales,
and "that it may be at once declared a place to which convicts may
be sent". "On the general subject of this Petition" the Governor
was referred to the Despatch of 9 December 1852 (No.93) which
contained the view taken by Her Majesty's present Government.
Duplicate Despatch No. 20 of 4 February 1853: the Secretary of
State acknowledging receipt of the Governor's despatch, No. 160
of 17 September 1852, enclosing a further letter from Mr Marsh on
the separation of the Northern Districts from New South Wales and
referring the Governor to Despatch No. 7 of 20 January.
Despatch No. 65 of 19 April 1853: the Secretary of State
acknowledging receipt of the Governor's despatch, No. 198 of
3 December 1852, with its enclosed petition from 90 inhabitant
householders in the southern portion of the District of New
England and the McLeay praying for the immediate severance of
