A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
... an Act for the better Government of the Australian Colonies has been
recently passed by the Imperial Legislature, and that in the Statute power
is reserved to your Majesty upon petition being presented from resident
householders located north of the 30th degree of south latitude to erect
that part of the Colony into a separate Government distinct from the
present Colony. ... That Petitioners would earnestly impress upon your
Majesty the Great value of this portion of your Majesty's Colonial
dominions ... as an extensive field for the reception of immigrants and
their families from the United Kingdom and the certainty of a happy home
for such as are morally and industriously disposed: but your petitioners
humbly, but solemnly protest against the resumption of Transportation in
any form or upon any condition whatever. - That Petitioners humbly
request your Majesty will be graciously pleased, at such time as your
Majesty shall deem fit, to issue your Royal will and command to erect this
part of New South Wales into a separate Government, and that when such
Royal command shall issue, they humbly represent that no other form of
Government and Legislature, than that which has been secured to the
Australian colonies, will be acceptable to them.
