State Records has commissioned the writing of a series on the administrative history of
the New South Wales Government. The first volume by Dr Hilary Golder has just been
published — Politics, Patronage and Public Works: The Administration of New South
Wales, 1842-1900 (University of New South Wales Press, 2005). The second volume of
the series, covering the period 1901-60, is currently being written by Dr Peter Tyler.
Clark, C M H. Select documents in Australian History 1788-1850, selected and edited by
C M H Clark with the assistance of L J Pryor, Angus and Robertson, Sydney, 1950 (1968
reprint). This contains both published and manuscript documents on Australian history in
eight major sections, with commentaries: the British background, the first settlements,
transportation, immigration, land policy, the squatters, constitutional history, and,
economic and social conditions. The section on constitutional history includes, among its
subdivisions, "New South Wales, 1787-1842"; "The separation of Port Phillip, 1840-50"
and "The passing of the Australian Colonies Government Act, 1844-50".
Clark, C M H. Select documents in Australian History 1851-1900, selected and edited by
C M H Clark with the assistance of L J Pryor. Angus and Robertson, Sydney, 1950 (1968
reprint). This is a second volume of selected published and manuscript documents on
Australian history, continuing from where the previous volume left off. It includes a
lengthy section on political history, covering such topics as: Responsible Government;
the transfer of legislative and executive power from the Imperial Parliament to the
Parliaments of the Australian Colonies; political democracy; constitutional conflicts;
Federation; and political parties.
