100th anniversary of parliamentary government in New South
Wales at the Sydney Town Hall on Tuesday 22 May 1956;
• address delivered by the President of the Royal Australian
Historical Society, Dr C H Currey, at Vaucluse House on 23 May
1956, on the occasion of the celebration by the Vaucluse
House-Nielsen Park Trust of the centenary of the beginning of
responsible government in New South Wales, together with the
address by Wallace C Wurth, the President of the Trust;
• the Premier J J Cahill officially opening the exhibition of the
Royal Australian Historical Society to signalise a century of
responsible government in New South Wales on Monday 21 May
1956.
In addition to the principal official celebration of the occasion, the
opening of the Thirty-eighth Parliament by the Governor on
22 May, which was followed by a buffet luncheon, the report gives
details of some of the other events: a State reception in the Town
Hall on 22 May; a luncheon sponsored by the Sydney City Council
of pioneers on 23 May; a ball at the Town Hall on 24 May; an
"Open Day" at Parliament House on 25 May; special services in
various churches during the weekend preceding 22 May, and a
combined service attended by Members of Parliament and of the
Judiciary at St Stephen's Church. Other contributions to the
celebrations included: daily band concerts in Sydney parks
organised by the City Council; local celebrations arranged by
municipal and shire councils throughout the State; an exhibition of
historical documents held by the Mitchell Library; a display at the
Museum of Applied Arts and Science; a luncheon to mark the
occasion by the Royal Empire Society on 23 May; and a luncheon
by the Overseas League on 26 June. The report also details how
school children participated in the celebrations.
Also included is a printed booklet Centenary of Responsible
Government in New South Wales, which had been issued to all
secondary school students of New South Wales.
