A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
The Address-in-Reply from the Legislative Council was delivered
by the Acting President on 13 June 1956, and that from the
Legislative Assembly by the Speaker on 14 June. Copies of the
program/order of proceedings for these are included as well as the
Address-in-Reply from the Legislative Assembly and that from the
Legislative Council.
Other papers comprise a copy of the Governor's speech as
approved by Cabinet; copies of invitations issued to, and replies
from, those individuals invited to enter the Legislative Council
Chamber with the Governor on this occasion; and a draft program
for the opening of Parliament.

File 59/1755 comprises correspondence about the opening of
Parliament for the centenary celebrations of responsible
government on 22 May 1956.
Papers relate to the various arrangements made for the day: an
escort of Mounted Police, motorcycle escorts, the attendance of a
Service Guard of Honour, the firing of a salute of guns, the hiring
and setting up of a public address system to amplify proceedings
for outside spectators, decorating the room of the President of the
Legislative Council with cut flowers, closing part of Macquarie
Street to traffic for the salute, car arrangements, and the hire of
seating. A précis of the proceedings is also provided as well as a
copy of the souvenir program booklet produced for the occasion.
Also included are requests for tickets; the payment of accounts;
broadcasting of the opening of Parliament; and, the framing and
mounting for display of the message from Her Majesty the Queen.

This mainly comprises a typescript report entitled "Centennial
anniversary of Parliamentary Government and Responsible
Administration in New South Wales ... 22nd May, 1956". It details
the various events and celebrations undertaken to mark the
centenary and includes various speeches presented at some of
these:
• address to school pupils by the Governor Sir John Northcott on
the occasion of the centenary of responsible government,
22 May 1956 (broadcast by the ABC on 22 May 1956);
• the Premier J J Cahill speaking at a Royal Empire Society
luncheon to celebrate the Centenary of the New South Wales
Parliament on Wednesday 23 May 1956, as well as the speech
of the President of the New South Wales Branch of the Society,
Dr Garnet Halloran;
