State Governors, 1925-26 (Comprises a copy of a letter of
14 September 1925 to the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs
concerning remarks made by Premier Lang on the position of
Governor; a newspaper clipping from The Sydney Morning Herald
of 11 March 1926 concerning the possible recall of Sir Dudley de
Chair and the nomination of Sir Timothy Coghlan (Agent General
for New South Wales in London) as the next Governor, with the
election issue being avoided; and an undated clipping from The
Daily Telegraph concerning a memorial to the British Government
asking for the appointment of Australians as State Governors.)
Papers regarding differences between the Governor, Sir
Philip Game, and the Premier J.T. Lang; the financial crises,
the proposed abolition of the Legislative Council; and the
dismissal of the Lang Ministry, 1930-32

These papers can be divided into five broad categories.
• Correspondence about additional appointments to the
Legislative Council, July-September 1931. This consists of
correspondence (letters, telegrams, etc) from private
individuals and organisations to the Governor expressing their
approval or disapproval of his refusal to appoint additional
Members to the Legislative Council. The organisations include
unions, ALP Branches, Municipal Councils, the All for Australia
League, Riverina Movement Branches, Western Movement
Branches, Women's Leagues, and Chambers of Commerce.
Some carbon copies of the Governor's replies, which are usually
in the form of non-committal acknowledgements, as well as
newspaper clippings are also included.
This forms almost half of the bundle.
• Papers relating to the appointment of 25 Members to the
Legislative Council, 1931. This comprises correspondence
regarding the Governor's action in agreeing to appoint 25
additional Members to the Legislative Council in late 1931.
Letters either for or against the Governor's action, many of
them unsigned and virulent, and copies of telegrams to and
from London are included. The representations are from
individuals and organisations (eg local government councils).
• Abolition of the Legislative Council, 1930-31. This mainly
consists of telegrams between Governor Game and the
Dominions Office, both coded and uncoded, about the abolition
of the Legislative Council. Included is a printed copy of a
Parliamentary paper "Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 1930.
Judgment of the Lords of the Judicial Committee of the Privy
Council in the case of The Attorney-General of New South Wales
versus the Honorable A. K. Trethowan, M.L.C., and others, with
the Attorney-General of England and another as interveners,
respecting the Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 1930, repealing
section 7A of the Constitution Act", ordered to be printed
15 September 1932.
