Guide 3 to NSW State Archives relating to Responsible Government - OCR - Flipbook - Page 183
A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
was being heard before the High Court and the Attorney advised
that "it would not be appropriate for the elections to be held
during the period the case is before the High Court and it would be
desirable to defer the elections until the House resumes next
year". Therefore, the minute relating to the issue of the original
writ for the elections had to be cancelled by the Executive Council,
the date of the elections rescheduled to 16 March 1961, and a
fresh writ issued.
Included are papers relating to: expenses associated with the
election; notifying dates of issues of writs, nominations, of ballots
and return of writs; laying election papers on the table of the
Legislative Assembly; and, compensation to officers who assisted
with the election; Also included are: correspondence from the
Clerk of the Parliaments (who acted as Returning Officer for the
elections), such as requests for the services of particular officers to
assist with the counting of votes; minute papers to the Executive
Council with draft writ attached for approval of issue of writ for the
election of 15 Members of the Legislative Council; newspaper
clippings concerning the elections and about the abolition of the
Legislative Council; results sheets of elections; copies/originals of
Returning Officer's certificate under the relevant Act re the election

"Julius Cartoons" re State elections (used for movie films
and "Postage-Poster Stamp" designs), 1915-17
CGS 12061,
[4/8721]
The file starts with a copy of a letter from the Queensland Labour
Party dated 21 June 1915 to Henry Julius concerning cartoon films
and postage/poster stamps produced and designed by Julius for
the Party [and used] for electioneering purposes. In August 1916
Harry Julius wrote to a Mr Edwards of the Premier's Office sending
rough ideas of three movie cartoons and an idea of the budgetary
cost of 200 feet. There are some further developments of the ideas
for moving picture cartoons with six different scenarios, suggested
by F L Edwards in August 1916 for the "approaching campaign".
Mr Julius raised an identical scheme for designing five movie
picture cartoons in February 1917.
There is no indication on the file as to whether Julius' scheme of
moving picture cartoons ever proceeded any further.
Working drawings for the movie cartoons and printed postage/
poster stamps are included on the file.
