Election papers, 1913
The General Election was held on 6 December 1913 and for those
electorates (Albury, Bega, Bingara, Raleigh and Tamworth) for
which a second ballot was required this took place on
20 December 1913. A second ballot occurred where no one
candidate had received an absolute majority of the votes.
In addition to papers relating to the running/holding of the
Election, this bundle comprises files registered in 1913 which
relate to the general administration of electoral matters.
Included are: electoral claims and applications to transfer received
after issue of the writ; requests for election nomination forms;
applications.for positions of Presiding Officers and Poll Clerks;
applications for temporary employment in the Electoral Office;
objections to proposal for the notification of election results in the
Domain on the night of the General Election; Crown Solicitor
advisings and opinions on electoral laws and matters; requests for
stores, such as rubber stamps, noticeboard for exhibiting electoral
notices, and for copies of Regulations; requests for copies of
Electoral Rolls and for maps showing boundaries of Electoral
Districts; claims for expenses; lists showing the number of electors
enrolled on the General Roll, 1913, for each Electorate of the
State; lists of addresses of Electoral Registrars and Deputy
Electoral Registrars for City and suburban electorates; list of
Returning Officers and their addresses; and, list of Returning
Officers to whom writs were posted 8 November 1913.
Also included are papers relating to: absent voters; enrolment of
people within the Federal Capital site; proposed appointment of
Sydney as an outside polling place for the suburban electorates;
eligibility for enrolment in an electorate of persons temporarily
located there; holding of Revision Courts; notices of objections to
names on the General Roll; removal of names from the Roll;
duplications and corrections to Electoral Rolls, including changes of
address; errors in printing Electoral Rolls; printing of Electoral
Rolls and List by the Government Printing Office; second ballots;
appointment and cancellation of polling places; polling booths;
claims for printing list of disqualifications/objections; destruction
of old Rolls for 1911-12 and Lists for 1912-13; payment of
overtime; vouchers for expenses; recommending persons for
employment; the appointment of temporary clerks; and, the
appointment and resignation of electoral officials, such as the
Returning Officer.
Particularly worth noting are: E13-7383 proposed Regulations
under the Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act (including
Instructions for the guidance of Returning Officers), in [5/5253];
and, E13-1575 General state of the poll for the General Election
held on 6 December 1913 for the Electoral District of Macquarie, in
[5/5256].
