A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
1865 Despatches
Included in box [4/1355] is Secretary of State Duplicate Despatch
No. 87 of 21 December 1865. In this Despatch Cardwell
acknowledges the Governor's Despatches of 21 July and
21 September 1865 (Nos. 63 and 88), in which were enclosed
petitions in favour of the separation of the Riverine District from
the Colony of New South Wales and other documents. Expressing
his regrets at the inconvenience to which the inhabitants of the
Riverine were subjected by their distance from the seat of
government, Cardwell nevertheless was convinced "that a
permanent injury will be inflicted on the Colony if these or other
passing inconveniences are allowed to supply a reason for
indefinite subdivision".

Despatch No.87
Federation
New South Wales and the
Commonwealth
On 1 January 1901 a momentous event took place which affected not only the Colony of
New South Wales but also the other Australian Colonies. This event was, of course, the
establishment of the Commonwealth of Australia.
With Federation the Colony of New South Wales became the State of New South Wales.
The Government also took the opportunity of consolidating the Constitution of the State,
and in 1902 the Constitution Act of 1902 replaced the Constitution Act of 1855.
State Records published A Guide to New South Wales State archives relating to
Federation in 2001, which is available in printed format and also on our website. It was
decided not to try to duplicate all of the records mentioned in this guide; only a handful
of records, mainly those relating to the transfer of property and records from New South
Wales to the Commonwealth of Australia have been included here. Excepted from this
are the records relating to the transfer of the Federal Capital Territory which can be
found in Part 3 of the Federation Guide.
