A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
I am therefore convinced that it would not be for the present
or future benefit of Australia that a tract of Country
comprising it would seem nearly half of New South Wales,
inhabited by an extremely scattered population of about
20,000 souls and having no direct access to the sea, should
become a separate Colony.
• Parliamentary papers entitled Riverine District (Correspondence
relative to constituting "Riverina" a separate Colony), ordered
to be printed by the Legislative Assembly 14 March 1866;
comprising copies of 1865 despatches between the Governor
and the Secretary of State for the Colonies with supporting
documents
• printed petition from the Riverine District of the Colony of New
South. Wales, in reply to a Cabinet minute forwarded to the
Secretary of State for the Colonies on 14 July 1865; together
with the subsequent Cabinet minute on the Riverine petition of
18 February 1867
• M16495 of 18 February 1867, a minute paper for the Executive
Council, upon which the Council has noted its advice that the
Cabinet minute relating to the Riverine District petition should
be forwarding to the Home Government.
Bundle 2/8020.7 includes
• July 1866 letter from Thomas Robertson, the Honorary
Secretary of the Riverine Association, to Francis Turville, the
Governor's Private Secretary, forwarding in a separate parcel a
petition to the Queen from the members of the Executive
Committee of the Riverine Council and asking that the petition
be forwarded to England (noted on this that the petition and
observations forwarded by Despatch No.15 of 20/2/67)
• copy of responding letter of 7 August 1866 from Francis Turville
to Thomas Robertson acknowledging receipt of letter and
petition and noting that the petition would be brought under
the notice of the Premier "for such remarks as he may think fit
to offer on the part of the Government"
• printed copy of the petition from the Riverine district in reply to
a minute of the Cabinet forwarded to the Secretary of State for
the Colonies on 14 July 1865.
