LC 61/1 in

LC 61/1 is an Address of the Legislative Council, dated 24 January
1861, requesting that copies of all Despatches between the
Governor and the Secretary of State on the subject of the
Resolution passed by the Council on 30 November 1859 respecting
the dismantling of New South Wales be laid upon the table.
The Resolution of 30 November 1859 was as follows:
That in the opinion of this Council, the proposed
dismemberment of New South Wales, by the erection of a new
Colony to the northward, to be called Queensland, is, under
present circumstances, impolitic, inexpedient, unjust,— and as
to so much of the said Colony as lies beyond the 26th degree of
south latitude is open to the legal objections submitted in the
Petition addressed by this House to Her Majesty on the
10th December, 1856.
The Council further resolved that the Governor should forward a
copy of this Resolution to the Secretary of State for the
information of Her Majesty's Government.
Included are Questions for the day of 7 November 1860 and
21 March 1861 from Minutes Nos.24 and 13 respectively; printed
copies of the Minutes of the Proceedings of the Legislative Council
of 30 November and 1 December 1859, and of 8 November 1860.
Also included is Despatch No.23 of 26 February 1860 from the
Secretary of State acknowledging receipt of this Resolution.
1861 Legislative Assembly and Council — LA 61/48
LA 61/48 is an Address from the Legislative Assembly, dated
8 May 1861, relating to the dismemberment of the Colony arising
from the petitions praying for separation of the Districts of the
Clarence, New England and Tenterfield from New South Wales.
The Legislative Assembly resolved that "in the opinion of this
House, no further dismemberment of this Colony, by the
separation of any territory lying between the thirtieth parallel of
south latitude and the Southern boundary of the Colony of
Queensland, can now lawfully be made without the concurrence
and consent of the People and Legislature of New South Wales"
and that "this House earnestly deprecates any such
dismemberment, as being not only inexpedient on general
grounds, but highly injurious to the interests of New South Wales".

1861 Despatches — M1168/B
The papers in M1168/B relate to petitions from inhabitants of the
Clarence and Richmond River for separation from New South
Wales and inclusion into the Colony of Queensland. Included is
Duplicate Despatch No.59 of 26 September 1861 from the
Secretary of State, in which the Duke of Newcastle acknowledges
the receipt of the Governor's Despatch of 20 May 1861 (No.27), in
which was forwarded two petitions from the inhabitants and
