A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
By the Order in Council, the separation of the Moreton Bay district and its erection into a
separate colony called Queensland would not take place until the Letters Patent had been
received and published both in New South Wales and in Queensland itself. The
separation took effect from the day of proclamation of the Order in Council in both of the
Colonies which occurred in December 1859.
The population of the new colony at the time of its separation was about 25,000. 20
