M20565 comprises a large number of papers relating to Federal
elections/referendums, dating from 1899 to 1905, such as
M20555/1 relating to the appointment of Critchett Walker as the
Returning Officer under the Australasian Federation Enabling Act,
1899. In particular, there are many papers relating to the Federal
election of 1901, including those about the appointment of
Returning Officers in connection with the Federal Election, 190001, and the appointment of places as principal polling places for
the Federal Electorates, 1900-01. Some of the papers with
M20565 are addressed to Critchett Walker as the Chief Electoral
Officer of the Commonwealth.
Box [5/6523] includes the following Minutes which relate to
electoral matters:
• M20575/1: writ of election dated 2 June 1899 in connection
with the submission of the Federal Constitution to the electors
of New South Wales under the Australasian Federation Enabling
Act, 1899 (including the writ, annotated with the results of the
poll)
• M20578: Police to act as Poll Clerks in outlying districts in
connection with the approaching Federal Referendum
• M20580: appointment and cancellation of polling places (large
bundle with many enclosures)
• M20584: issue of Proclamation declaring the result of the
submission of the Constitution to the electors
• M20590: minute by the Principal Under Secretary
recommending that officers residing in Ashford Electorate be
allowed to leave office at 1 pm on polling day, 26 September,
to record their votes.
