Many of the Electorates reported that there were no or little ballot
boxes remaining as they had been taken by the Federal
authorities. This was followed up by the Office: "Inform
Commonwealth Electoral Office that the Ballot Boxes in the
possession of his office are State property".

M13342/2 is a draft notice dated 1 March 1856 titled "Writs of
Election" concerning the arrangement for the holding of the
different elections for a General Election of Members to serve in
the Legislative Assembly. Included is part of a manuscript list for
Electoral Districts Nos. 24 to 34 showing for each Electoral
District: the number of Members to be returned; date of the writ
(1 March 1856); name of the Returning Officer; the name of the
chief polling place or place of nomination; the date of nomination;
polling day; names of polling places; and date of return of writ
(30 April 1856).
1867 Minutes — M16474
M16474 is a memorandum relating to 30 Vic No.21, the Electoral
Roll Act of 1866, which provided for members of the Police Force
to be appointed to perform the duties of Collectors of Electoral
Lists. The memorandum notes that the Benches of Magistrates still
needed to be notified about the extension of time provided in
section 2 for the amendment and revision of the Lists while the
Returning Officers needed to be informed that the commencement
of the electoral year had been altered from 12 April to 12 May,
that is the Electoral Rolls were to be prepared and come into force
on 12 May instead of 12 April.

Included are: a copy of the Act 30 Vic No.21; a copy of the printed
circular of 30 November 1866 to the Benches of Magistrates; draft
circulars to Returning Officers and to the Benches of Magistrates,
both approved on 10 January 1867; and, a draft letter to the
Under Secretary for Revenue & Trade in February 1867 forwarding
copies of the Act and of the January 1867 circular to the Benches.
