1904 Electoral papers
CGS 905,
[5/6821-22]
The papers in [5/6821] mainly relate to election accounts.
Included is correspondence from Returning Officers requesting the
payment of additional or special allowances, transmitting vouchers
or relating to the refund of overpayments. There are also
statements of election expenses (such as rent of office, hire of
rooms/venues, cleaning, stationery, allowances, clerical
assistance, miscellaneous expenses etc).
Most of the papers in [5/6822] relate to the appointment of
Returning Officers. This became necessary after the boundaries of
the 125 Electoral Districts were redefined and their number
decreased to 90 districts. Included are: recommendations of
persons for appointment as Returning Officers (by such persons as
Mayors and Members of the Legislative Assembly); applications for
appointments or re-appointment as Returning Officers; and other
correspondence relating to these appointments. Some petitions
from electors are also included.
There is also a register which presumably is a record of
applications or candidates for appointment as Returning Officers;
arranged alphabetical by Electoral Division, this shows number of
papers, name and address of applicant, which electorate resident
in, which electorate enrolled in, by whom recommended (generally
blank) and remarks.
Other papers relate to recommendations for changing, or
protesting against any change to, the central or chief polling
places or headquarters within Electoral Districts; and papers
concerning the alleged misconduct of the Returning Officer for the
King Division, Charles Lovely.
[5/6822] also includes various printed matter, including:
• List of Officers under the Parliamentary Electorates and
Elections Act of 1893 with List of Returning Officers, 1 August
1902;
• Census of New South Wales, 1901 - Population of towns and
villages for towns and villages outside Sydney containing more
than one hundred inhabitants (exclusive of Aborigines), 17 May
1902; and,

Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act, 1902 and the
Electorates Redistribution Act, 1904), 1904 (showing the 90
Electoral Districts containing 423 Registration Divisions).
