1903 Despatches — M6785/B
M6785/B comprises papers relating to the Royal assent to two bills
relating to the enfranchisement of women in New South Wales.
Assent of His Majesty to the Women's Franchise Act, 1902 and the
Parliamentary Elections (Amendment) Act, 1902 was signified by
two Orders in Council dated 20 May 1903. Messages concerning
this were laid before the Legislative Assembly on 7 July and before
the Legislative Council on 8 July 1903.

Included is a copy of Despatch No.34 of 29 May 1903 to the
Governor transmitting originals and copies of two Orders in
Council declaring His Majesty's assent to
the Bills No. 54 of 1902 and No.1 of 1903, of the Legislature of
New South Wales, entitled respectively `An Act to extend the
Parliamentary Franchise to Women, and for purposes
consequent on or incidental to that object', and `An Act to make
provision for the enrolment of women electors, and the issue to
them of electors' rights: for their voting at the polls, and to
amend the Parliamentary Electorates and Elections Act 1902'.
The Orders in Council, copies of the Acts, two copies of the official,
signed and sealed, Proclamation of 3 July 1903 signifying that the
Royal assent to these Bills had been granted on 20 May 1903, and
a minute for the Premier from the Governor of 28 May 1903
concerning a telegraphic despatch about the assent to these two
Acts are also included.

Includes a copy of New South Wales Government Gazette No.158
of 18 March 1904 which comprises a notice from the Electoral
Districts Commissioners of proposed new electoral districts to be
constituted under the provisions of the Electorates Redistribution
Act, 1904: "it is proposed ... to constitute in lieu of the existing
one hundred and twenty-five Electoral Districts of New South
Wales, ninety new Electoral Districts". This notice gives the
boundaries of each proposed new Electoral District and the names
of the Electoral Districts comprised wholly or in part in each
proposed new District. Objections to the proposed distribution of
Electoral Districts could be made to the Commissioners, in writing,
within 14 days of the notice.
Also included are: a copy of New South Wales Government Gazette
No.227 of 22 April 1904 which comprises a notice from the
Electoral Districts Commissioners on the final distribution of
Electoral Districts; drafts of Gazette notices, typed and printed
Gazette notices, and the Attorney General's opinion on the
notices; and some correspondence.
