A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
The papers mainly relate to requests for and payment of extra
remuneration to election officers, and election expenses. Included
are schedules of advances to Returning Officers to meet expenses
in connection with the forthcoming election under the Australasian
Federation Enabling Act, 1895; recapitulations of vouchers in
support of advances made to meet expenses of the Federal
Election; cheque deposit receipts; applications for advances or
further advances; receipts; vouchers for expenditure; explanations
for expenditures; and, letters forwarding recapitulations of
voucher forms and cheques for unexpended funds as well as ones
relating to the return of cheque and receipt books, books and
papers relating to the settlement of accounts, declarations, and
unused vouchers.
Federal Convention Election papers, 1897
This bundle mainly comprises letters from the various Returning
Officers forwarding papers relating to the Federal Convention
Election held on 4 March 1897 - such as tally sheets, stamps,
posters, unused forms, ballot papers, accounts of ballot papers,
statements of the poll, and declarations of electoral officers and
scrutineers.

Copies of the Chief Secretary's Office circular of 2 April 1897 to
various Returning Officers acknowledging receipt of the parcel of
documents; an account of ballot papers transmitted to, and used
by, each Deputy Returning Officer within the Hume Electoral
District for the Federal Election; and, papers re the appointment of
two scrutineers, Edward Finn and James O'Keeffe, for the Grafton
Electorate by one of the candidates are also included.
Federal Enabling Act — receipt of Regulations, 1898
Correspondence from Returning Officers acknowledging receipt of
copies of Regulations received in connection with the election
under the Australasian Federation Enabling Act, 1895 and the
Amendment Act of 1897. These Regulations related to the
submission of the Federal Constitution to the electors of New
South Wales on 3 June 1898.

1898 General Election — receipt of writs, 1898
Voting at the General Election of 1898 took place on 27 July.

The majority of the papers relate to letters from the various
Returning Officers acknowledging receipt of the writs of election.
Other electoral matters dealt with include requests for: supplies of
printed envelopes; forms of advertisements and roll forms;
information re an Act to extend the hours of polling; instructions;
the use of public schools in certain places for polling; and, for
copies of the Government Gazette of 9 July which gave details of
the arrangements for the Election. Also included are notifications
of the appointment of substitute Returning Officers which usually
contain the substitute's declaration.
