Declarations of Returning Officers, 1894
A note dated 28 June 1894 confirms that "It is necessary that
every Returning Officer shall make a declaration under Section 62
before entering upon his duties, which should be transmitted to
this Office". Each Returning Officer had to declare that he would
faithfully and impartially perform the duties of his office to the
best of his ability and that he would not attempt to ascertain for
whom any elector would vote or disclose or "by any word or action
directly or indirectly aid in the disclosure or discovery of the
same".

This bundle comprises copies of declarations made by Returning
Officers, Deputy Returning Officers and Poll Clerks, required to be
made under the terms of 56 Vic No.38, the Parliamentary Elections
and Electorate Act of 1893, with some associated correspondence.
Election writs, 1895
This bundle mainly comprises letters or telegrams from Returning
Officers acknowledging receipt of election writs for Members of the
Legislative Assembly. Also included are some declarations of
Returning Officers, Deputy Returning Officers and Poll Clerks; and
notifications concerning the appointment of substitute Returning
Officers with the substitutes' declarations. In addition there are
acknowledgments of the receipt of a copy of the Electoral Act,
instructions and of the Government Gazette containing the
arrangements for the election.

The polling day was 24 July 1895.
Polling places, 1896
Colonial Secretary's Office circular letter of 4 September 1896
(copy with 96/14943) requests the Returning Officers to notify
"which, if any, of the Polling-places for the Electorate District of
may, in your judgment, be cancelled and what additional
places, if any, should be appointed". These papers are mainly the
replies from the Returning Officers concerning any required
alterations in polling places. Included are papers advising that the
current polling places are sufficient and correctly placed for the
voters (ie that no alteration is necessary), and relating to the
cancellation of existing and gazettal of additional new polling
places. Occasionally, the Returning Officer's report records the
names of all the existing polling places.

The papers with Inverell include minute papers for the Executive
Council recommending the appointment and cancellation of polling
places in the electorate as well as a map of the Inverell Electoral
District. A map of the Rylstone Electorate District is also included.
Also included are some requests for information from Returning
Officers on the boundary of their Electorate.

payment of expenses, 1897

members to represent the Colony of New South Wales at the
Federal Convention, which took place on 4 March 1897.
