A Guide to New South Wales State Archives relating to Responsible Government
Included are: papers ordered to be printed by the Legislative
Assembly on 13 February 1883 relating to the cancellation of
Dinga Dinga as a place for taking the poll for the Electorate at
Young; a petition for cancellation of the polling place at
Grahamstown in the Tumut Electorate (papers laid on the table of
Legislative Assembly 27 April 1883); and for the Namoi Electorate,
the official declaration of the results of the poll of 7 December
1882.
The papers are arranged roughly alphabetically by Returning
Officer and Electoral District.
1885 General Elections
This bundle comprises the various papers associated with the
running of an election: the Returning Officers acknowledging the
receipt of writs, commissions as Returning Officers, circular and
Gazette notices; papers re election expenses, including statements
of expenses and requests for payments; correspondence
concerning the resignation and appointment of Returning Officers;
declarations of Returning Officers, Presiding Officers and Poll
Clerks; notifications about the successful candidate in the election;
and papers relating to the appointment of additional polling
places.
Returns of election expenses, 1885
A small bundle relating to expenses incurred during the election
for the Electoral Districts of Bathurst, Braidwood, Clarence, Forbes,
Gloucester and Gundagai. Included are correspondence,
expenditure vouchers and claims for contingent expenses.
Return of numbers of ballot papers issued to electors, 1885
On 21 November 1885 the Colonial Secretary's Office wrote to
Returning Officers requesting a return on the number of voting
papers issued to Presiding Officers. These papers are mainly
telegraphic reports from Returning Officers, in response to this
request, on the number of voting papers issued to electors at the
last general election; in at least one case none being issued as
there was no contest.

Also reported in some cases are the number of voters on the roll,
statements of the number of electors who voted in the general
election (Sydney 16 October 1885), and the number of ballots
issued to Returning Officers or Presiding Officers. For the Balmain
electorate, the final results of the poll have been reported.
One of the letters confirms that all papers relating to the election
of Members of the Legislative Assembly had been sent to the Clerk
of the Legislative Assembly: "all my papers have been in the
hands of the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly since the 4th inst".
Applications for employment in connection with the
Electoral Act, 1893

Includes applications for positions on the staff attached to the
Commission for the Redistribution of the Seats of Parliamentary
Representatives under the new electoral law. Other applications
relate to positions such as a draftsman to prepare plans and as a
clerical assistant for completing the rolls under the new Electoral
Act.
