1872 General Elections
Box [1/2200] comprises papers relating to the General Elections
held in February and March 1872. The papers date from 1870 to
1872.
The bulk of the papers relate to polling places — confirming polling
places, requesting or recommending additional ones, and for the
cancellation of some existing ones. These comprise letters from
Returning Officers, minute papers for the Executive Council, copies
of Government Gazette notices, and petitions from electors (the
latter for additional polling places).
Other papers relate to: Returning Officers (recommendations for
appointment, appointment of, and resignations of); appointment
of Presiding Officers and Poll Clerks; acknowledgement of the
receipt of writs of election, and of forms; requests for forms,
copies of the Electoral Act and instructions, and for the local
printing of ballot papers; requests for approval of fees to Presiding
Officers and Polling Clerks; notifying the results of the day of
nomination; transmitting or informing the names of Presiding
Officers and Poll Clerks; the return of writs and informing the
results of the election; notifying that the ballot papers have been
sent to the Legislative Assembly; the supply and receipt of
electoral lists; the supply of ballot boxes; and, queries on election
procedures. Some declarations of Returning Officers are also
included.
One interesting document is that relating to the use of Public
Houses in the election process. This is Colonial Secretary circular
letter 71-2,380 of 28 April 1871 requesting that, in places where
Government buildings are available as places of nomination or of
polling, the use of Public Houses should be avoided and alternative
places used where practicable. It was issued in response to what
was understood to be a common practice in country districts of
holding elections at Public Houses. Other interesting documents
are the protests against the election of Mr Harris Levi Nelson for
the Electoral District of Orange.
