These are letters received from surveyors,
mostly relating to matters concerning the survey
and measurement of land. Other matters
included in the correspondence relate to
employment of convicts in survey parties, and
the granting of tickets of leave.
Copies of letters sent to private persons and
officials, 1822–53
These volumes contain copies of all letters sent
during the period 1822 to 1853 with the
exception of those entered in the following
separate letter books: Copies of letters sent to
the Colonial Secretary from 1826; Copies of
letters sent to the Land Board, 1826–29; Copies
of letters sent to Assistant Surveyors of Roads,
1845–49; and Copies of letters sent to Surveyors
from 1832.

The subject matter includes all correspondence
on land matters (up to 1826), including
instructions to surveyors on the survey and
measurement of land (up to 1832),
correspondence with the Principal
Superintendent of Convicts about prisoners
employed in the Survey Department.

These letters relate to requests for the repair of
roads and bridges, and requisitions for stores
and equipment for parties under the control of
the Surveyor of Roads and Bridges. Others
letters concern overseers and convicts employed
on the various road gangs.
