Guide to New South Wales State archives relating to convicts and convict administration
concerned with matters of some importance such
as the court case re the female convicts at Emu
Plains, the dispute between Dr Douglass and
Rev. S. Marsden over the convict James Ring,
and the problem of bushrangers. Also in this
volume are despatches from the Secretary of
State.
The second volume [4/1672] contains copies of
letters and enclosures concerned with such
matters as arrangements for convict ships,
applications for pardons and tickets of leave,
land grants, salaries, arrangements for the
security of public funds, supplies and rewards for
the capture of bushrangers.

Copies of regulations and notices published by
the Colonial Secretary on the Governor's
command, such as regulations for granting
tickets of leave, notifications of appointments
and dismissals, calling for tenders for
government projects, the situation of many
surgeons when employed in the convict service,
notification of rewards for capture of wanted
criminals, and published extracts of reports from
Captain Wetherall and Captain Wright respecting
the establishment of a settlement at Western
Port.
Government Medical
Adviser
The first Medical Adviser to the Government was appointed in 1848 to
have general supervision of the colony's medical institutions after the
Convict Medical Establishment was discontinued. All correspondence by
medical officers was to be directed through him, and he was to prepare
returns required by the government.

Medical Adviser to the Government, Dr Patrick
Hill. Letters received and sent relate to: the
Lunatic Asylum, Tarban Creek; the Lunatic
Asylum, Parramatta; the Roman Catholic Orphan
School, Parramatta; Darlinghurst Gaol;
Parramatta Gaol; and the hospital, Cockatoo
Island.
The majority of correspondence relates to Tarban
Creek, including correspondence with the
Colonial Secretary and Superintendent of Tarban
Creek (Dr Campbell) concerning the release of
inmates, quarterly returns of patients admitted,
discharged and died (relating to the admission
and transfer of escaped patients, and alterations,
