The first Chief Constable of Police appointed to Wombo was James Skilton, who later
became the Chief Constable of Dalby replacing Charles Douglas Eastaughffe, first Chief
Constable of Dalby, Myall Creek. Skilton must have had trouble with the english vowels
as he wrote his name as Skilton in his letter 55/9737 but was know in Dalby as Skelton.
He and Eastaughffe, after leaving the force both operated separate businesses in Dalby for
many years as Commission Agents. .
An hotel, "The Travellers Rest" licensee John O'Connor, was located at that place in
January 1866, when town and suburban allotments were surveyed, then advertised on the
30th Jan. 1866 and many times later but none was ever sold.
JNO. FERRETT - A local squatter and Magistrate of the Terriority. Also a member of
the Wombo Bench. His run called WALLAN, at one time Ferrett & Dangar.
H.S.RUSSELL - Henry Stuart Russell, author of "The Genesis of Queensland". An early
1840 squatter on the Darling Downs, his Run CECIL PLAINS on Upper Condamine
River.Probably more correct to site Warwick as the Upper Condamine & Cecil Plains as
Middle Condamine.
E.RENS - A local Darling Downs Squatter - First in partnership with Bingham in the run
BENTLAND in 1847 not far from Wombo, Lower Condamine..
TERRIBOO - An early Downs squatting run, situated on the Condamine River about 4
miles down stream from the Gov. Reserve mentioned and closet Run to the Court House
when removed from Wombo.Early leasees were Richard Birrell & Leonard E. Lester.
G.F.LESLIE - George Farqhar Leslie, one of the Leslie Brothers who first settled on the
Downs in 1840. Elected member for the United Pastoral Districts of Clarence and Darling
Downs from Sept. 1851 to Jan. 1855.
GOGGS - Matthew Goggs - An early Lower Condamine Squatter on CHINCHILLA &
WONGONGERA.- close to the original site of C.P.S. at Wombo.
EWER James Garnett - An early Lower Condamine Squatter close to the C.P.S. at
Wombo - His Runs WOMBO FOREST & Yamo.
MOFFATT - Thomas De Lacy - Early Downs Squatter. Partnership in runs around
Goondiwindi. and COORANGA which was half way between Dalby, Myall Creek &
Wombo.
