Note PR -ALSO, a previous search through Col.Sec.Index. revealed in 1853 that " a letter
from Matthew Goggs, Lower Condamine, a memorial callingfor a C.P.S. at Wombo"
labelled 10040
A search in the Registers revealed that this letter also followed the same trail as the
above at 53/3412(3234)
WOMBO was recommended as a Polling Place in Letter 55/2686 23 March 1855- The
Proclamation declaring that " the Reserve at Wambo(sic) in the Pastoral District of
Darling Downs shall be a Polling place for the Electrol District of the United Pastoral
Districts of Clarence & Darling Downs" on the 2nd day July 1855.
Names and place names of above LOWER CONDAMINE - Area situated in the vicinity of the Condamine River about
124k. north west of the Township of Dalby. The present township of CONDAMINE
situated on the river. Was once a thriving township but later deminished by the formation
of MILES when the railway was constructed to the town of Roma in the1870s.
DALBY - Situated on Myall Creek, which flows into the Condamine River. Formerely
called MYALL CREEK. Early settlement and original Memorial for same located in
4/3228
WOMBO or WAMBO - called Wombo by the local inhabitants and members of the
Bench. Called Wambo by the Inspector General's Police Department and the first
appointed Chief Constable, probably due to the already formed Parish of Wambo near
Singleton N.S.W. The local WAMO Shire Council, now pronounces at as Wombo; the
Shire Office is situated in the town of Dalby. WOMBO was situated about 30 k south of
the present township of Chinchilla, was originally located on the main road and coach
route from Dalby to Roma prior to the railway being built. It was gazetted a polling place
in about 1856.
