Please note that:
1.
If a person believed that he had a claim to a grant of land he would write a memorial, setting out
the details of his claim, to the Commissioners of Claims. On receipt these memorials were
registered in:
Register of Memorials Nos. 1-970, 20 December 1833 - 15 April 1835 (X13; microfilm
copy AO Reel 1420) for the first Act, and in
Registers of Cases Nos. 1-1549 (2/2369-71; microfilm copy AO Reel 1249) for the second
Act.
The Commissioners would prepare a draft report (which remained with their own records) and a
final report which they sent to the Colonial Secretary, together with the memorial and other
papers. The Colonial Secretary's Office then registered the final reports as letters received, noting
the register with the memorial number or the case number. The papers relating to the first Act
were then put away in memorial number order and those relating to the second Act in case
number order. Other registered in-letters of the Colonial Secretary may have been attached and
the registers noted accordingly.
2.
Colonial Secretary's registered in-letters sent to the Commissioners under blank cover are
recorded in:
Registers of Blank Cover References to the Commissioners of Claims, 1837-44
2/2170 May 1837 - July 1841
2/2171 July 1841 - March 1844
There are indexes in the front of the volumes.
3.
There were also Commissioners of Claims for land in New Zealand. Most of the papers relating
to these cases were sent to New Zealand. The Colonial Secretary retained this register of papers
sent:

Act of 1833 (4 Will. IV No. 9)
